Asset Tracking VS. Inspection Mgmt Tools

We’ve all heard of these terms – asset tracking, inspection management, inventory and so on; these terms are often used interchangeably but they are in fact very different. Both tools utilize similar technology i.e. Barcodes, RFID, GPS and Bluetooth but what the user gets out of each tool differs as illustrated below.

Uses for asset tracking include computer equipment at offices, packages, vehicles and fixtures and chattels for example. Asset tracking tools store documents as per the record retention requirements and provide an overview of asset inventory.

Inspection management tools are used to complete and organize asset/equipment inspections which are performed for a variety of reasons including compliance with regulations/codes etc., preventative maintenance and insurance coverage. Inspection management tools allow users to electronically report on the status of equipment/assets. These reports are stored as per the record retention and any noted deficiencies are sent to the right people automatically for service. Example of uses for inspection management tools include inspections of fire equipment, first aid kits, washrooms, fire-rated doors, chemical storage rooms and so on.

Asset tracking and inspection management tools collect similar information but the difference lies in what is done with the information. Asset tracking tools store the asset information whereas inspection management tools store the information as well as document and action deficiencies.

Before selecting a tool, it’s important to understand and be clear on what you want to get out of the tool.
